Albany, Georgia
Albany, Georgia is situated along the banks of the Flint River in Southwestern Georgia in Dougherty County. Pecan groves, farms and pine trees are still surrounding the city of Albany. The primary employers in Albany are the health care industry, education as well as the Marine Corps Logistics Base. Albany is the commercial center for the southwest portion of Georgia. The well known entertainer Ray Charles was born in Albany.
HistoryThe Creek Indians were the original inhabitants of Albany, Georgia. They gave the region the name "Thronateeska," the term for the local flint. In 1836 Nelson Tift, from Connecticut, created a settlement near the Flint River. He chose the name Albany since the New York state capital named Albany was also situated near the navigable head of a river. Cotton production was thriving and Albany, Georgia became a primary transportation center. Steamboats moved the cotton to other regions. Later, Albany, Georgia became a prominent railroad station.
In 1841 and 1925 the Albany, Georgia experienced severe flooding caused by the Flint River. In 1942, the construction began for an Army Air Corp training base. It was later given to the US Navy and was shut down in 1974. Miller Brewing company bought a portion of the land to construct a brewing facility. In 1951 the Marine Corps constructed a huge base on the outskirts of Albany.

Golf enthusiasts can enjoy the numerous golf courses located in Albany. The South Georgia Peanuts baseball team plays in the South Coast League. The South Georgia Wildcats play arena football games. The Albany James H. Gray Civic Center is a large facility which hosts basketball games, ice shows, rodeos, wrestling and other events.
TransportationAlbany, Georgia is served by the Southwest Georgia Regional Airport.
Higher EducationAlbany State University and Darton College are located in the city.
