Marietta, Georgia was first settled in around 1824. Marietta was named after the wife of the Supreme Court Judge, Thomas Cobb. However, some also believe that it was named after Marietta, Ohio. Marietta, Georgia was officially recognized on December 19, 1834. Marietta also became the home base of the Western and Atlantic Railroad. Oakton, which was constructed in 1838, is the oldest continuously occupied residence of the city. Marietta also served as the headquarters of Major General Loring during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. Marietta, Georgia was incorporated in 1852 and John Glover was elected as the first mayor.
