Rome, Georgia History

This region was originally inhabited by the Cherokee Indians. Europeans were attracted to this area when gold was discovered in 1828. The present city of Rome was established in 1834 by five men who thought that they had discovered a peninsula, and wanted to develop it into a town that would eventually become a trade center. One of these five men, Col. Daniel Mitchell, had suggested Rome as the name for the town. In the following year Rome, Georgia received its charter and was declared a county seat.
