Georgia Out-Patient Drug Treatment
There are many types of outpatient drug treatment. Most consist of some form of education classes, support groups, and or individualized therapy where the addict does not require overnight stay. This is a popular form of treatment because of it's flexibility. These types of programs can be very useful to those who must continue to work or attend school. Programs for outpatient treatment vary depending on the patient’s needs and the facility but they can consist simply of attending an community 12-step group, to a more structured outpatient program typically meeting a couple of times every week for a couple of hours at a time or, intensive out-patient(IOP) which consists of a highly structured group program that meets 3 to 5 days a week for a few hours at a time.
Attending outpatient treatment is different from inpatient treatment in that you are not under constant supervision, you still live at home and requires strict self discipline. For those who fear they may give in to the temptation of drugs or alcohol in the early stages of treatment, inpatient residential treatment at a drug and alcohol rehab center is recommended.

Georgia Outpatient Treatment
There are several different types of programs that fit under the heading of outpatient. One would be Intensive Outpatient (IOP) treatment programs which is typically a four to five evenings a week treatment for two to four hours each evening. Another would be Partial Hospitalization and Day Treatment, which would require the addict to go to a treatment facility during the days and participate in the daily treatment regiment, then return home for the evening and overnight. Both of these types of treatment programs are usually associated with freestanding treatment programs or clinics.
Standard outpatient treatment is usually less frequent one to two evenings a week and one to two hours each of those evenings. As you might imagine, outpatient clients usually would not be classified as substance dependent or might be involved in this type treatment only after completing a more intense inpatient program and use the outpatient as a structured transition back into the community setting with a gradual reduction in treatment intensity.
The challenge for the patient is to maintain abstinence in early sobriety without the 24-hour-a-day supervision allowed by inpatient treatment. It is safe to assume that outpatient treatment for the individual who is addicted is not a preferred choice of treatment and has a high probability of continued use, relapse and failure.
Despite the differences between outpatient treatment programs, the goal is always the same: help individuals recover from drug or alcohol addiction so that they may re-enter society and lead a self-sufficient, drug-free life.
What services are offered in outpatient treatment?
There are a variety of services available via outpatient treatment, including:
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- 12-step work
- Alcohol and drug education

- Life skills
- Re-socialization skills
- Pharmacological treatment

What Type of Treatment is Best For Me?
Deciding which treatment is best for you can depend on a number of factors including:
- The drug of addiction
- The length of addiction
- The degree of addiction
- Co-occurring disorders
- Time commitments
- Health problems
- Drug history and previous treatments
The decision is a personal one but if, for example, you have undergone certain treatments before and they didn't resonate with you then you will know to try something different. A common mistake that people make is choosing the simplest, easiest method of detoxification with little or no rehabilitation. Breaking the physical addiction to drugs and alcohol is important, but only part of the equation. Sustaining an abstinent life without healing the mental and spiritual wounds that originally led to substance abuse is near to impossible.
